Unjuiceable: The Definitive Guide On What Not To Juice

Juicing is a great way to get more fresh fruits and vegetables in your diet. As a proud new owner of a juicer, I can tell you that it’s a lot of fun to experiment, but there’s a bit of a learning curve when it comes to what you should steer clear of. To save yourself some time, please learn from my mistakes. Here is Unjuiceable: The Definitive Guide On What Not To Juice.

Citrus Rinds – The rinds of citrus fruits, mainly oranges and grapefruits, contain indigestible oil that’s hard on the stomach and extremely bitter tasting. For peace of mind, peel the rind.

Apple Seeds – Apple seeds contain a small amount of cyanide, which is usually no problem if you swallow them whole. And while your body can easily detoxify the small amount of cyanide released if the seeds are crushed, it’s probably better to be safe than dead.

Bananas – Apparently bananas are a pretty dry fruit. There’s a reason you don’t see banana juice at the grocery store. It takes about 3,400 bananas to make one ounce of banana juice. Unless you’ve got a pretty generous banana budget and a lot of spare time, you should look for potassium elsewhere.

Avocado – See above. Avocadon’t.

Kale – Kale, a healthy superfood, is a popular choice among juicers. But be forewarned, its bright green color will ruin the beautiful reds and oranges of your juice, turning it all into an unappetizing barf-brown.

Bottles Of Juice – While this is an excellent way to get high-quality juice, juicing other bottles of juice is lazy and essentially the same thing as copying somebody else’s work. You’re better than that. Get creative.

Juicy Fruit – The gum Juicy Fruit weirdly contains no fruit or juice, making it one of the most misleading product names on the market, right up there with I Can’t Believe It’s Not Butter (what?) and Baby Formula (where’s the math?). Putting Juicy Fruit in your juicer will only clog it up and damage the motor.

Raw Meat – There’s already a name for raw meat juice. It’s called blood. It’ll ruin your juice and make your kitchen look like a crime scene. If you’re looking for a way to add protein without looking like a murderer, soy beans are a better way to go.
